|  | I have lived here since 2002 but only started creating gardens on the section about 2004. Before that the section was quite bleak. Two of my boundaries are shared with a dairy farm so that they can only be planted with plants that cows won't eat. In pre-colonial times this land was swamp land and the water table rises in the winter months. The hills in the background are foothills to the Southern Alps, also known as the backbone of Te Waipounamu (South Island). We can get snow and severe frosts in winter, strong winds in spring particularly, and drought in summer. |
