The Fat Freddy's Drop debut album, "Based On a True Story", was recorded in a basement studio of one of the band members and released in May of 2005. The album went "gold" on it's first day. Then it went on to garner a lovely stash of Tui Awards at the October, 2005 New Zealand Music Awards: Album of The Year, Best Aotearoa Roots Album, Best Group, and the People's Choice Award.
They prefer to be seen first and foremost as a live band and are described as fusing "skanking urban Pacific roots, soul, dub, jazz, and electronica into hypnotic and thunderous grooves"; well done the person who said all that, you took the words right out of my mouth. Hehehe.
The band features a three piece horn section, Warryn Maxwell (aka Fulla Flash), Toby Laing (aka Tony Chang), and Joe Lindsay (aka Hohepa,). In Maori Hohepa is a transliteration of Joseph. These 3 met at the Wellington Jazz School in the mid 1990's and are the core of a musical movement in Aotearoa/New Zealand centred on bands such as Little Bushman, The Black Seeds and Trinity Roots.
The full list of the band members is Dallas Tamaira (vocals), Toby Laing (trumpet), Warryn Maxwell (saxophone), Joe Lindsay (trombone), Tehimana Kerr (electric guitar), Iain Gordon (keyboards), and DJ Mu (mix).
The video also features a flash Kiwi Fish and Chip shop. Kiwi viewers are likely to recognise some famous and/or familiar faces. Import.flv (12.8 MB)
